Hey dude, sorry for the late reply - I haven't been online here in ages. The PSU performs brilliantly, since this build I have added 8GB more RAM, 2 x SSDs and a new graphics card and it still runs perfectly. As far as im aware Thermaltake is a reputable brand and one that I have certainly used before - I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it.

Mate it's one of the best games I have ever played, I feel jealous of people who haven't played it yet and will get it on release! So much fun and, to be honest, even though it's 'early-access' etc it's so playable and just epic!

I play on the server danglebaer.no if you're ever shopping around for anew private server.

Awesome looking build! I love the look of the MSI stuff and think the Black/Red works in perfectly with the white case. Definitely get an Nvidia/GeForce case sticker to finish off that white cable-tidy panel! :)

Unfortunately with AC and other older MMOs like Dark Age of Camelot, I started playing MMOs with WoW and always found the older ones so clunky compared to it. Would have loved to have experienced the old EQ1 and AC games back when they were in their prime.

Well nothing yet. I play with 1 monitor though at 1080p so im not running 3 4K displays etc etc but it's played everything perfect so far.

Currently playing loads of ARK and getting 20+ FPS constantly at High/Epic which is really really good for ARK at the moment considering its EA and fairly unoptimised. Plays Witcher 3 flawlessly, same with DayZ, Dragon Age Inquisition, H1Z1, Planetside 2 and everything else I've tried.

Well it's ran anything I've played so far at the highest settings, including The Witcher 3 and runs ARK at 20+ FPS on a combination of High/Epic.

It's amazing.

Alpha 'Early Access' idea so yeah, it could do with a good bit more optimising but to be honest it plays faultlessly on my machine with default video settings at either High/Ultra 1080.

It's really quick to learn compared to DayZ etc, crafting is excellent and fairly straight forward. Easy to learn, difficult to master I guess. Me and a buddy of mine spent yesterday building a small base and had so many crazy moments due to 1) the unpredictability of players and 2) dinosaurs!

It's a survival game where you have to find food, make shelter, clothes, weapons, group up with people, kill people, kill dinosaurs, tame dinosaurs. Survive. Awesome fun so far but just bearing in mind you're playing a game quite likely over 1 year away from being ready for a general release.

Just an update as promised. I've had the PC on for about 3 hours now, done some Illustrator work for about 1.5 hours and the rest has been general internet fuckery. Not done any gaming due to my PSU issue as the new one arrives tomorrow.

Temps are: HD0: 29C GPU: 34C Core: 31C

System is silent and nicely cool, although yeah I am hardly giving it abuse right now.

Aye to be honest i've always felt that way, my previous card before I got the 5850 was an 8800GT x2 in SLI and before that just the single 8800GT. Every few years I have replaced graphics cards but i've always managed to get damn good use out of them first man and they've always managed to play the latest games in such a way that they look nice but still play smooth.

Although, to be fair, I've become pretty good with using my 5850 and disabling Clouds, Shadows to Low, no Bloom etc haha!

Further update to the actual problem though: I had a look on Event Viewer and it's basically 100% the PSU not being 1) Powerfull enough, and 2) It's a ******** brand.

Aye you know with the old 5850 i was running at mostly High with a few mediums and the odd Ultra and the game is actually smooth running at 23-26fps with that old GPU. Beautiful game!

PC running fine with the new GPU untill it's put under some strain, so drivers, connections etc are alright - that's why i originally thought it was the temperature

Well the GPU is the only new addition and the temperature never reached higher than 57C before the PC shut down.

PC idles fine and was working perfectly when i was just mucking about on YouTube etc for about an hour there.

Yeah someone had mentioned before that although it says 700W that it is most likely only good for delivering half of that.

PC is running fine right now, no issues, but i'm doing nothing apart from using Chrome. Am I correct in saying when you start using the GPU a lot more (eg playing a big game) that it would draw more power from the PSU?

Thanks for your reply MaraG.

My PSU isn't modular, it just has a big bundle of cables spewing out of it. One of which is a 2x PCIE 6pin one. There aren't any other spare PCIE wires to use.

Thanks for the feedback, Vitacomp. I'll definately be looking at replacing this PSU as the next purchase then, seen some good deals on a Corsair one (600X or something like that) and it has all the cables I need, plus it's modular, which I didn't evne know was a thing :)

Cheers bro.

Thanks Talby,

I never realised that PSUs had such a broad range of Tiers and it's disappointing to find out my PSU is listed as one that could kill me! I shall never trust it again. I have had it for around 6 years and it has never done anything crazy but it seems as though a new PSU is now in order :) The oens you have linked are for you and the rest of my Amiercan brothers but i'll see if I can find them on a similar UK based website. Thanks mate.

Haha oh god, I have a PSU that literally says it has a good chance of killing me! Love living that dangerous life...

Porky, that XFX one looks great, kinda gutted I have to now consider spending £60+ on a PSU now as I assumed my EZCool one was fine, didn't realise there was such a large rating criteria and it's disappointing that im Tier 5! I've had this PSU for about 6 years with no problems, back when I first got it it was powering 2x 8800GTs in SLi as well as the rest of the PC although neither of those old cards required their own power supply!

I had looked at them actually but probably must have found a good deal on others to take my mind away from them.

Am i not correct in saying the 280 is the same as the 7950? I haven't actually ran a GPUBoss on them i dont think.

Yeah, I actually plannet to get a Corsair H55 as Scan.co.uk was selling thrm for 25.00 for a brief window there but missed out so decided to stick to the stock cooler untill another good deal came up.

As above, it turns out i have zero dexterity when using clippers and cut the cable on the CPU cooler so when I went to my local PC store they had the Zalman and a quick search gave me some great reviews

TLDR; It was cheap and readily available. Looks cool too.

Thanks for the feedback guys. Regarding fusing the 2 ends back together, the wire is so small I would likely just keep shredding it - its literally as thick as a hair (probably nore like the pubic variety) and i actually don't have any wite stripping pliers either.

I'm gonna have a look in PC World tomorrow and see what's available.

Thanks all x

It's all compatible, that's no issue at all. Would be worth while just double-checking that the RAM is also compatible or if it's older RAM maybe better investing in newer DDR3 stuff.

Motherboard is a Z97 chipset and the MSI ones have built-in overclocking features so OC'ing the CPU isn't an issue, although maybe want to invest in a better cooler than the heatsink that comes with it; a quick search is finding loads of people overclocking this up to 4.0GHz and beyond and keeping it stable. GTX 750 is solid and seems like a good price, others might be able to recommend better cards for the money though i'm a bit out of touch with proper up-to-date prices etc.

Don't see any issues as to why this wouldn't give you nice FPS on games like BF4,

Thanks Horusrogue,

Is there a particular i5 you would recommend, following the best bang for your buck theory?

I really do like the idea of overclocking, it was also the initial reason i got the Q6600 'back in the day'. My knowledge of all the specs of CPUs, etc, follows a pretty basic 'Bigger is Better' kinda view which i get may not always be correct. I do a fair amount of Illustrator and PS work so i also felt the 6 cores would be a decent shout?

Thanks!

I don't really have a total budget. Just trying to keep it as reasonable as possible. Not interested in spending £200+ on a GPU right now, that would be a purchase in a good few months time in my mind anyway.

Maybe i'm doing it backwards but I feel that the rest of the system lags behind more compared to the 5850, which is a very old card now, but cost me a bunch at the time and seems still passable, albeit on a very low level compared to modern cards. My thoguhts behind the 660 was not as a graphics card to last me for years, more so just because I got it really cheap and it still seems to retail fairly high for an 'older' card and is a lot better than the 5850.

Should I splash out on a better GPU first then get the rest of a new build?

If im getting a GPU as well I really don't want to spend much over £100 for it, new or old.

Thanks for your reply :)

DayZ is an amazing game, but after playing the Mod and SA for so long, it just seems so slow in development. I do appreciate that it is alpha though and have had so much fun, but the world is HUGE and seems empty on a 40/40 server, so many hackers, etc but I can't help but love it.

H1Z1 is also fantastic, and you should check it out as well. Much more optimised and has tons of content, faster development as well it seems. Fun game with wild life, base building, etc, but isn't quite as dark and unpredictable as DayZ
