Any upgrade to intel will involve swapping out the motherboard and the CPU, you could look for a second hand I5 Haswell and 1150 motherboard but it really depends on how much money you want to throw at you computer

zen wont be out until Febuary 2017 and I don't see the point of moving to the 8350 as it is old tech now

Comment reply on Forum Topic "GTX 1060 or rx 480 8 gig version?"

Similar cards in terms of performance with the GTX 1060 edging it,

The best choice will come down to price, if you can pick up a RX 480 for a lot cheper get that, if they are the same price or the 1060 is cheaper then get that

Both will be great cards for 1080p

Keep the wifi as is providing you are happy with the speeds you are getting, move the graphics card to the top slot, PCI-E x16

The graphics card should always go in the pci-e x16 slot, or to put it simply, the top slot.

Networking cards usually go in a small slot (pci-e x4

Comment reply on Forum Topic "RX 470 Hit at the Egger"

  • 1 point

Well I can't speak for other countries but the 470 is about £220 on Amazon UK and a 1060 can be had for £230

That's very close to pricing itself out of the market

Comment reply on Forum Topic "RX 470 Hit at the Egger"

  • 1 point

It's crazy, it's hard to get hold of one of these cards and the very few that are available are priced well above the price suggested by AMD

I've seen RX 470's priced similar to the GTX 1060 which makes the card poor value, not good value which it should be at the suggested price

Comment reply on Forum Topic "Differences Between SLI and Crossfire"

  • 1 point

Not really, whether you are using Nvidia or AMD you won't get the full performance of two cards in SLI or crossfire, by that I mean just because one card may give you 60fps at a certain setting, that doesn't mean you will get 120fps with two cards.

You don't get twice the vram either, if both your cards had 4gb of vram you would still only get 4gb of vram and not 8gb, even with two cards in sli or crossfire.

You could usually expect one and half times the performance with 2 cards in sli or crossfire.

the downsides to crossfire and sli are the extra power requirements and the extra heat you create by having two cards over one. It is generally considered better to buy the best single card you can afford rather than buying two lesser cards

Comment reply on Forum Topic "Differences Between SLI and Crossfire"

  • 1 point

They generally do the same task (allow you to link and get the benefit of two cards.

Crossfire is a term AMD uses, SLI is a term Nvidia uses

So two AMD cards would be put in crossfire and two Nvidia cards would be put in SLI

I should probably add that not every motherboard allows you to either crossfire or SLI so if this is in your plans make sure you get a motherboard that is capable

You would know if you needed new drivers as it wouldn't work. As long as it switches on as normal then all is fine.

Comment reply on Forum Topic "Will the i3 bottleneck the gtx 1070?"

  • 1 point

It probably would bottleneck it yes, an I3 is ok for lesser cards up to and including a GTX 960 or R9 280 but once you get beyond that into the higher end cards you will get bottleneck.

If you are getting a GTX 970 or above, basically anything that is VR ready then you should have a CPU with 4 or more cores. You might be better choosing the GTX 1060 and an I5 if that is your budget

Don't worry about down votes, they mean nothing. If you are someone who worries about them then it's probably better not to say this is better than that because sure as the sun will rise in the morning, someone will disagree with you.

If you think it's better and want to build it then that is all that counts right

Comment reply on Forum Topic "i5-4460 vs A10-7850K"

  • 2 points

The graphics on the A10 would probably be better than what comes on a i5 but an i5 is 10 times better in terms of computing tasks.

Most people would buy an i5 and get a separate graphics card if for example they were a gamer, therefore they get the best of both worlds.

A10 7850's were used by people as a budget option, they allowed for ok graphics without the need to buy a separate graphics card but they would never compete with an i5 and half decent graphics card

Comment reply on Forum Topic "Is this worth 600?"

  • 1 point

I'm pretty sure the the FX 8350 needs a GPU to even work as it has no built in graphics.

To be honest is doesn't sound worth it, you could always put the parts together on this site and see how much they cost.

Even if the parts did come to 600 though you would never pay full price for second hand parts.

Comment reply on Forum Topic "Should I upgrade my i5 4690?"

  • 1 point

Once you have an i5 the difference you see in games will come from the GPU not the CPU

My advice would be to get the best graphics card you can afford and keep the i5 as that will be the biggest factor on the FPS you get at different resolutions.

A better CPU may help a small amount in certain games but probably not enough and not often enough to make it worth your while

It's called democracy, the majority of people voted to leave and more people voted in this referendum than any election in 30 yrs so it's not like someone can argue people didn't turn out.

There's a lot of people who don't like the result but that would have been the case if it had gone the other way

The vote was 52/48 so pretty close and 35 million people voted. I believe in democracy and I believe that the people have spoken.

Comment reply on Forum Topic "PC upgrade advice needed"

  • 2 points

Your PC looks fine as is. If you want to upgrade your system the question you should be asking is what do you use it for the most? Are you a gamer if so, maybe get a better graphics card (970 or 980) if you are doing more computing tasks such as rendering and editing then maybe upgrade your i5 to an i7. Have you got an SSD and if not would it be worth spending money on that?

That's what I would be thinking rather than upgrading for the sake of upgrading.

You shouldn't really be buying an I3 and having it paired with a GTX 980TI If you can afford that kind of money on a GPU then you can afford an I5

Get an I5 and a GTX 980 or GTX 970

If you cn't afford at least an i3 you should leave intel alone, the pure dual core intel chips are obsolete as far as gaming is concerned, they stutter like crazy in certain games and won't even play in others. They are a dead duck that should be avoided.

If that's all your budget allows you should go with the X4 860k

watch this to see what I mean

Get a GTX 950 if you can for that money, if you can't and 120 is the absolute max you can spend then you're probably looking at a GTX 750ti

Comment reply on Forum Topic "390 vs 970 for 900p"

  • 1 point

@1600x900 A GTX 960 will be more than enough and a lot cheaper, if you're a student on a budget there is no reason to go with a 970 or 390 to play at that resolution. I'm sure you can find other uses for the money

Comment reply on Forum Topic "When Will Dual-Cores Become obsolete?"

  • 2 points

If we are talking gaming I would say the pure dual core CPU is already obsolete. I3s are fine, the hyper threading on the dual core makes a big difference in the latest games but the pure dual core cpu already causes issues when trying to run the latest games, some require a patch to even get them to work and frame stuttering can be a huge issue in certain games.

As for your basic PC that is used for web browsing, the dual core will be fine for another 5-10 years, maybe longer.

It's not bad but I would change the graphics card, the R9 270x is not that good and for £185 you should be able to buy a GTX 960 which would be a lot better, I have actually seen the GTX 960 on Amazon for £150

Comment reply on Forum Topic "which Geforce GTX 950 should i get for my first build ??"

GTX 950 is the best card for $150, it beats the r7 370 + r9 270x, However you can pick up a GTX 960 for about 185-190 so my advice would be to get the cheapest 950 there is because the more you pay for it the better you would be just buying a 960

Don't you have things like trading standards in the US?

This wouldn't happen in the UK, shops pretty much have to take it back and give you a refund or you get the trading standards involved and they will take them to court, fine them and shut them down

Probably the only good thing about Europe, consumer protection.

Also why didn't Newegg take it back if they are who you bought if from? We would send back to the store, receive refund/replacement and then the store would have to send the item back to the manufacturer or does it work differently in the US?
